Horatio was born in July 1849 in Darcy Lever and his baptism took place on October 7th, 1849 at St. Peter's (Bolton).^1 2

Horatio's father was Robert Tong and his mother was Nancy Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Sarah Davenport. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Robert, William, Peter, James, Sarah and Hannah.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 3 in March 1853 in Bolton.  He was buried on March 14th, 1853.^3 4
