Thomas was born in July 1833 in Darcy Lever and his baptism took place on July 7th, 1833 at St. Peter's (Bolton). Thomas' father was Robert Tong and his mother was Nancy Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Sarah Davenport. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Robert, William, Peter, Horatio, James, Sarah and Hannah.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
