William was born in 1845 in Bistre.¹ William's father was John Tomlinson and his mother was Jane Leach. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Tomlinson and Martha Carr. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named John, Edward, Martha, Anabella and Jessie.
