Mary's father was William Thornton and her mother was Mary Dunn. She had four brothers and six sisters, named William, James, George, Joseph, Prudence, Annie, Maria, Ruth, Frances and Eliza.  She was the second oldest of the eleven children.  She died at the age of 84 in 1907.³
