Ann, known as Annie, was born in January 1830 in Beverley and her christening took place there on January 6th, 1830.1 2  Annie's father was William Thornton and her mother was Mary Dunn. She had four brothers and six sisters, named William, James, George, Joseph, Prudence, Mary, Maria, Ruth, Frances and Eliza.  She was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.
