George was born in 1828 in Beverley and his christening took place there on October 10th, 1828.1 2  George's father was William Thornton and his mother was Mary Dunn. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named William, James, Joseph, Prudence, Mary, Annie, Maria, Ruth, Frances and Eliza.  He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
