Phebe's father was Allen Sykes and her mother was Mary Ann Blackburn.  Her maternal grandparents were George Blackburn and Phebe Oldham. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Benjamin, Allen, Alfred, George, Mary, Annie and Martha.  She was the oldest of the eight children.  She died at the age of 18 in September 1870 in Dewsbury.²
