Samuel's father was George (Homer) W Stocks and his mother was Miriam (Myram) E Epworth. His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Stocks and Sarah (Sally) Campinot; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Epworth and Mary Ellin. He had five brothers and a sister, named Benjamin, Joseph, James, Job, Silas and Mary. He was the youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 74 in 1940.
