Mary's father was William Stocks and her mother was Sarah Brook.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Stocks and Eliza Wilkinson. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Jno, David, Charles, Fanny, Sarah, Elizabeth, Ellen and Rachel.  She was the third youngest of the nine children.
