David's father was William Stocks and his mother was Sarah Brook.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Stocks and Eliza Wilkinson. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Jno, Charles, Fanny, Sarah, Elizabeth, Ellen, Mary and Rachel.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
