Jonathan was born on March 8th, 1799 in Huddersfield and his christening took place on April 14th, 1799 at St. Peter (Huddersfield).1 2  Jonathan's father was Benjamin Stocks and his mother was Ann Walker.  His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Stocks and Sarah Cliffe. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Benjamin, William, George, Joseph, Benjamin, John, Samuel, Elizabeth, Mary and Ann.  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.

‌Jonathan and Ann were married in a religious ceremony on May 7th, 1821 at St. Peter (Huddersfield).2   They had three sons and five daughters, named Wilkinson, Walker, Joseph, Mary, Martha, Ellen, Sarah and Emma.  There are possibly more children.  Mary and Martha were twins.
