John was born on May 18th, 1811 in Huddersfield and his baptism took place on October 20th, 1811 at St. Peter (Huddersfield).1 2  John's father was Benjamin Stocks and his mother was Ann Walker.  His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Stocks and Sarah Cliffe. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Benjamin, William, George, Jonathan, Joseph, Benjamin, Samuel, Elizabeth, Mary and Ann.  He was the second youngest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 65 in May 1876 in Huddersfield.  He was buried on May 29th, 1876 at Woodhouse Christ Church.3 




John's first family with Elizabeth (Eliza) Welch

‌John and Eliza were married in a religious ceremony on May 31st, 1841 at St. Marys (Oldham).5  They had three sons and five daughters, named Ben, Henry, John, Mary, Ann, Fanny, Sarah and Elizabeth.  Fanny and Sarah were twins.
