James was born on November 4th, 1797 in Crosland Hill and his christening took place on December 31st, 1797 in Almondbury.1  James' father was John Stocks and his mother was Sarah Gledhill . He had six brothers and five sisters, named Richard, John, Richard, Noah, Sammy, David, Betty, Mary, Hannah, Sarah and Phebe.  He was the youngest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 7 on October 3rd, 1805 in Crosland Hill.1
