David was born in 1796 in Crosland Hill and his christening took place on May 24th, 1796 in Longwood.1  David's father was John Stocks and his mother was Sarah Gledhill . He had six brothers and five sisters, named Richard, John, Richard, Noah, Sammy, James, Betty, Mary, Hannah, Sarah and Phebe.  He was the eleventh oldest of the twelve children.
