Edward's father was Job Stocks and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Ainley. His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Stocks and Sarah Cliffe. He had a brother and four sisters, named Thomas, Caroline, Ann, Charlotte and Betty. He was the second oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named William, Eliza and Sarah. He died at the age of 73 on November 25th, 1890 in Wakefield.²
