Jane's father was James Roberts and her mother was Jenny (Jane) Wilson.  Her paternal grandparents were James Roberts and Lucy Coulthurst. She had two brothers and a sister, named Henry, James and Eleanor.  She was the second oldest of the four children. She had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Thomas, John, Frank, Barnard, Maria, Amy, Ann and Martha.
