Samuel was born in 1841 in Leigh.1  Samuel's father was John Rigby and his mother was Margaret Gaskel. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Peter, William, James, Sarah, Mary, Margaret and Ann.  He was the youngest of the nine known children.
