Mary was born in 1826 in Pennington and her baptism took place on March 3rd, 1826 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Mary's father was John Rigby and her mother was Margaret Gaskel. She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Peter, William, James, Samuel, Sarah, Margaret and Ann.  She was the second oldest of the nine known children.
