John was born in 1828 in Pennington and his baptism took place on February 24th, 1828 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1 2  John's father was John Rigby and his mother was Margaret Gaskel. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Peter, William, James, Samuel, Sarah, Mary, Margaret and Ann.  He was the third oldest of the nine known children.
