Sarah was born in March 1823 in Pennington and her baptism took place on March 16th, 1823 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Sarah's father was John Rigby and her mother was Margaret Gaskel. She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Peter, William, James, Samuel, Mary, Margaret and Ann.  She was the oldest of the nine known children.
