Mary was born in 1877. Mary's father was James Proctor and her mother was Mary Brereton. Her maternal grandparents were Abraham Brereton and Ann Orrett. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Abraham, Abraham, John, Mary, Anna, Elizabeth and Sarah. She was the youngest of the eight children.
