Samuel's father was Thomas Prince and his mother was Esther Eddowes. His maternal grandparents were William Eddowes and Elizabeth Shortreid. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, Esther and Sarah. He was the fourth oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 1 in December 1904 in Birkenhead.²
