Joseph's father was Thomas Oxton and his mother was Alice Oxton. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Oxton and Rachel Williams. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Moses, Henry, Elizabeth, Rachel, Annie, Jane and Sarah. He was the third youngest of the eight children.
