Elizabeth's father was Thomas Oxton and her mother was Alice Oxton. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Oxton and Rachel Williams. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Moses, Joseph, Henry, Rachel, Annie, Jane and Sarah. She was the second oldest of the eight children.
