Thomas' father was Richard Orrell and his mother was Sarah Gorse.  His paternal grandparents were George Orrell and Mary Molyneux; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Gorse and Alice Mawdsley. He had four brothers and two sisters, named George, George, Richard, Henry, Mary and Alice.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 60 in April 1936 in Wigan.³
