John was born in 1824 in Sharples and his christening took place on April 4th, 1824 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  John's father was William Nightingale and his mother was Peggy (Margaret) Riding.  His paternal grandparents were Humphrey Nightingale and Mary Hart; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Riding and Molly Gorner. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Joseph, Mary, Ellen, Ann, Eliza and Alice.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
