Robert was born in 1815 in Blackrod and his christening took place on October 18th, 1815 at St. Katherine (B'rod).1  Robert's father was William Nightingale and his mother was Peggy (Margaret) Riding.  His paternal grandparents were Humphrey Nightingale and Mary Hart; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Riding and Molly Gorner. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, John, Mary, Ellen, Ann, Eliza and Alice.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
