Edward was born in 1863 in Ceylon. Edward's father was Sgt John Mather and his mother was Catherine Murphy. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Jane Welsby. He had a sister named Margaret. He was the younger of the two known children. He had four half-brothers and five half-sisters, named John, Peter, William, James, Mary, Rosetta, Ellen, Elizabeth and Eliza.
