Elizabeth's father was Sgt John Mather and her mother was Martha Alice Brierly. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Jane Welsby. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Peter, William, James, Rosetta, Ellen and Eliza. She had an adopted sister named Mary. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Edward and Margaret.
