Peter's father was Sgt John Mather and his mother was Martha Alice Brierly.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Jane Welsby. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, William, James, Rosetta, Ellen, Elizabeth and Eliza. He had an adopted sister named Mary. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Edward and Margaret.  He died at the age of 14 in June 1896 in Bolton.²
