Mary was born in 1828 in Little Lever and her baptism took place on July 6th, 1828 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Mary's father was John Millington and her mother was Harriet Whitworth.  Her paternal grandparents were Edward Millington and Ann Davies. She had two brothers and four sisters, named John, Peter, Ann, Harriet, Martha and Elizabeth.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
