William was born on August 4th, 1880 in Turton and his baptism took place on September 19th, 1880 at St. Anne (Turton).¹²

Birth Notes

William's father was William Mather and his mother was Sarah Jane Briggs. His paternal grandparents were Andrew Mather and Elizabeth (Isabel) Holden. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Andrew, George, John, Amos, Fred, Samuel, Alice and Annie. He was the fifth oldest of the ten children. He died as a war casualty at the age of 37 on March 30th, 1918 in France.³
