Joseph was born in 1875 in Edgworth.¹

Birth Notes

Joseph's father was William Mather and his mother was Sarah Jane Briggs. His paternal grandparents were Andrew Mather and Elizabeth (Isabel) Holden. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Andrew, George, William, John, Amos, Fred, Samuel, Alice and Annie. He was the oldest of the ten children.
