William was born on January 13th, 1825 in Darwen and his baptism took place on April 17th, 1825 in Over Darwen.1 2  William's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Phoebe (Feby) Duxbury.  His paternal grandparents were William (Will) Mather and Betty Beswick. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, James, Nancy and Rachel.  He was the oldest of the six children.

‌William and Ellen were married in a religious ceremony on July 7th, 1851 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Blackburn).3  They had three daughters named Martha, Phoebe and Rachael.  There are possibly more children.
