John was born on August 25th, 1828 in Darwen and his baptism took place on January 15th, 1829 in Over Darwen.1 2  John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Phoebe (Feby) Duxbury.  His paternal grandparents were William (Will) Mather and Betty Beswick. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, James, Nancy and Rachel.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
