William's father was James Mather and his mother was Catharine Chandler.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and <Unknown>. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Ralph, James, John, Thomas, John, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the youngest of the eight children.  He died at 6 months old in February 1852 in Bolton.  He was buried on February 17th, 1852 at St. James (Ashworth).²
