James' father was James Mather and his mother was Catharine Chandler.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and <Unknown>. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Ralph, John, Thomas, John, William, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 1 in April 1838 in Rochdale.  He was buried on April 19th, 1838 at St. James (Ashworth).²
