John was born in August 1839 in Rochdale and his baptism took place on September 20th, 1839 at St. Chad (Rochdale).1 2  John's father was James Mather and his mother was Catharine Chandler.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and <Unknown>. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Ralph, James, Thomas, John, William, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 1 in December 1840 in Manchester.  He was buried on December 3rd, 1840 at St. James (Ashworth).3
