John was born on July 24th, 1849 in Haslingden and his baptism took place on August 19th, 1849 at St. Paul (Bury).1  John's father was James Mather and his mother was Catharine Chandler.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and <Unknown>. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Ralph, James, John, Thomas, William, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.  He died at 7 months old in February 1850 in Haslingden.  He was buried on February 21st, 1850 at St. James (Ashworth).1
