Mary was born in March 1844 in Rochdale.1  Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Catharine Chandler.  Her paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and <Unknown>. She had six brothers and a sister, named Ralph, James, John, Thomas, John, William and Elizabeth.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.

‌Mary and Edwin were married in a civil ceremony in September 1865 in Manchester. There are no children.
