William was born in 1865 in Atherton and his baptism took place on May 21st, 1865 at St. John the Baptist (Atherton).1  William's father was Edward Mather and his mother was Betsy Morris.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Farnworth. He had three brothers and six sisters, named John, James, Edwin, Mary, Francis, Mary, Jane, Ellen and Betsy.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.
