John was born in August 1868 in Atherton and his baptism took place on August 9th, 1868 at St. John the Baptist (Atherton).1  John's father was Edward Mather and his mother was Betsy Morris.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Farnworth. He had three brothers and six sisters, named William, James, Edwin, Mary, Francis, Mary, Jane, Ellen and Betsy.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.  He died in 1868 in Atherton.2
