Mary was born in 1874 in Atherton.1  Mary's father was Edward Mather and her mother was Betsy Morris.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Farnworth. She had four brothers and five sisters, named William, John, James, Edwin, Mary, Francis, Jane, Ellen and Betsy.  She was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
