Ellen was born in 1878 in Atherton.1  Ellen's father was Edward Mather and her mother was Betsy Morris.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Farnworth. She had four brothers and five sisters, named William, John, James, Edwin, Mary, Francis, Mary, Jane and Betsy.  She was the third youngest of the ten children.
