William was born in June 1841 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on June 13th, 1841 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  William's father was Charles Mather and his mother was Mary Dawson.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann (Nancy) Greenwood. He had four brothers and a sister, named James, Charles, John, John and Betsy.  He was the third youngest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Thomas, John, Ann and Mary.  He died at the age of 47 in December 1888 in Bolton.3
