John's father was Charles Mather and his mother was Mary Dawson.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann (Nancy) Greenwood. He had four brothers and a sister, named James, Charles, William, John and Betsy.  He was the second youngest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Thomas, John, Ann and Mary.  He died at the age of 1 in July 1844 in Little Bolton.  He was buried on August 2nd, 1844 in Bolton.²
