James was born in 1834 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on January 26th, 1834 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  James' father was Charles Mather and his mother was Mary Dawson.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann (Nancy) Greenwood. He had four brothers and a sister, named Charles, William, John, John and Betsy.  He was the oldest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Thomas, John, Ann and Mary.  He died at the age of 66 in June 1900 in Ormskirk.3

‌James and Mary were married in a religious ceremony on June 1st, 1851 at St. Mary (Deane) by a curate and witnessed by James Stott & Mary Ann Worthington.7  They had three sons and seven daughters, named Charles, John, James, Mary, Emma, Nancy, Sarah, Louisa, Alice and Annie.  There are no more children.
