John's father was Charles Mather and his mother was Mary Dawson. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann (Nancy) Greenwood. He had four brothers and a sister, named James, Charles, William, John and Betsy. He was the youngest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Thomas, John, Ann and Mary.

  In 1881, John (33) stayed in 5 Turton Street, Little Bolton with his mother Mary Longworth (72, a Shop Keeper), after both fathers had died.
  
  In 1897, another John son of Mary and Robert married Martha Haigh in Massachusetts, so this could be him after his mother died. In 1900, John born March 1847, aged 53 has a 26y old wife Martha and son Robert born Aug 1898. He is a Meat Cutter in Lawrence, Massachusetts. However, he had been here 35 years so isnt this John!
