Thomas was born in 1839 in Golborne.1  Thomas' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Jane Cooke. He had three brothers and five sisters, named John, Charles, Willmot, Ann, Ellen, Elizabeth, Mary and Charlotte.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
