Elizabeth was born in 1835.  Elizabeth's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Jane Cooke. She had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Thomas, Charles, Willmot, Ann, Ellen, Mary and Charlotte.  She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
